1 week out

Jan. 13th 2015 Tuesday - It was just a dream.  Just a moment ago.

One week out from our big trip.  This is a once in a lifetime kind of thing.  We quit our jobs, lived in a hotel for a couple of weeks, sold all our stuff, found a friend to watch our cats and bought a one way ticket to Central America.  Why?  The short answer is because we always wanted to.  Simple.  The long answer is bit more interesting though.  We wanted to learn Spanish, and we wanted to do it by immersion into another culture.  I wanted to spend some time on some side projects as well as learn some new software skills.  We wanted to take a wild adventure.  We wanted to see the world.  We wanted to take a break from work for income, and work for pleasure.  Ashley will probably volunteer at some local hospitals or wherever else an emergency room nurse can.  She wants to be a bi-lingual nurse, so this will fit perfectly into her career path.
Today I received several “good byes” and “good lucks”.  Regardless of their opinion (mostly positive) they were all certainly interested in this wild adventure Ashley and I have prepared for ourselves.  It is sad to say good bye to so many nice people.  This job is the best job I’ve ever had, and I have made a lot of good friends.  But you can’t have roots and wings at the same time.  And it is time to trim the roots and sprout some wings!
As soon as I finish writing this I am going to head to the pharmacy and get some vaccinations.  I hate needles.  I told someone at work that, and they thought it was funny.  “You are scared of needles, but not of quitting your job and going to Central America.”  It is true.  But I would prefer not to get hepatitis, or tetnus…. So I will voluntarily submit my flesh to be stabbed and liquid injected into my body, in hopes that I will not be susceptible to these diseases.
Not nervous, but very excited.  It’s getting real though.  Been waiting on this for a long long long time, and now things are really starting to move quickly.
